Frequently Asked Questions
Commitments Campaign
What is the Data Science for Everyone Commitments Campaign?
The Data Science for Everyone Commitments Campaign is an annual campaign that launched in 2021 and seeks to elevate the importance of data science and data literacy. It encourages action to expand data literacy among K-12 students. The inaugural Commitments Campaign inspired more than 270 commitments to action. Learn more here.
What is the Data Science for Everyone Commitments Event?
The Commitments Event is a virtual event that concludes the Commitments Campaign. The event highlights the importance of increasing access and quality of data science in elementary and secondary schools and showcase top commitments from the inaugural Commitments Campaign. The event will feature panel discussions, keynote speakers, mini-AMA’s and more.
Who is eligible to make a commitment?
Everyone has an important and unique role to play in this effort! We invite any individual or organization to participate. If you are younger than 18 but want to make a commitment, please have your parent or guardian fill out the form for you.
What is a commitment?
A commitment states the action that you will take to help Prepare a Data Literate Generation.
Strong commitments are brief statements with 3 key components: the stakeholder(s) committing, the action you’re committing to, and when you will fulfill the commitment. For examples of commitments from our inaugural 2021 campaign see here.
Commitments are powerful because they have a cascading effect by inspiring others to join you in action and creating a platform to step up publicly about the importance of data literacy.
When will the 2022 Commitments Campaign take place?
The 2022 Call for Commitments opens on Thursday, March 9th and will close on Monday, May 16. The DS4E Team will provide rolling feedback to commitment makers and an opportunity to identify partnerships and collaborators. The campaign will also include the opportunity to attend webinars to gather information and network with other commitment-makers. Register for one of three webinars here.
Why should I make a commitment?
Making a commitment is a great way to showcase your work and gain free visibility in front of potential partners and funders looking to support this important work. Your organization will be able to step onto the national stage to take action on a topic that is in demand, fills a growing need, and is gaining momentum.
More broadly, you should make a commitment because this topic is current. Recent job reports show that 47% of companies say data and analytics have fundamentally shifted the way they do work but yet 60% of companies report difficulties filling positions and finding talent due to a lack of data science education. The prevailing K-12 curriculum does little to support students in developing the vital data literacy skills required to interpret and work with data.
By contributing, we are giving students the necessary tools to have access to higher education, higher paying jobs, and deeper community engagement.
What is the difference between the individual submission form and the organization submission form? How do I submit my commitment?
If you are committing on behalf of your organization (including schools, districts, government agencies, industry and other organizations, please submit the organization submission form.
If you are committing as an individual (parent, student, teacher or other individual), please submit the individual submission form.
Can I get feedback on my commitment?
Yes, if you are interested in getting feedback on your commitment be sure to select the “I would like feedback on my submission” button within the submission form. After, the DS4E team will get back to you within a week to provide recommendations for your commitment.
Will all commitments be public?
There is strength in numbers, so we want to publicize the great commitments you all will come up with. By agreeing to the Terms and Conditions on the submission form, you give us permission to include your information in the Commitment Directory, which will be published on our website, and other materials that come out of this campaign. If you have concerns about this, please contact us at info@datascience4everyone.org
What are the terms and conditions of submitting a commitment?
The Commitments Campaign is calling upon schools and universities, industry leaders, policymakers, funders, and individuals to commit to action so that all students have the opportunity to gain data science skills.
The Commitments Campaign will culminate in a virtual launch event where commitment-makers, education experts, policymakers and advocates will discuss data science education, announce major partnerships and opportunities, and celebrate forthcoming action.
